Our Approach
At Liberty STEAM Charter, teachers, scholars, and families are all united around the same goal — college and a choice — filled life for our scholars.
Our success is driven by:
Highly Effective Leaders
We believe in the power of a diverse, exceptional team. We learn from and with each other. We believe in empowering our school teams and investing in leadership development and training.

Safe, Structured, Joyful, & Nurturing Environments
We provide a safe, structured, joyful, and nurturing learning environment. We build meaningful relationships rooted in love, empathy, compassion, and respect that fosters a love of learning and a willingness to take risks and reap the rewards.
Focus on Character
Success in life depends on both academics and learning. We help scholars foster character strengths essential for their own success, empowering them to express their voice confidently and improve the world around them.

High Expectations
We create clearly defined and measurable high expectations to promote academic achievement and conduct, ultimately creating and reinforcing a culture of achievement and support.
LSC Through College & Career
Our counselors and advisors support scholars as they prepare for and select the right college or career. After high school, we help LSC alumni navigate the social, academic, and financial challenges they might encounter while in college and their respective careers.
Unified Champions
At Liberty STEAM Charter, we are proud to be a Unified Champion School through Special Olympics—a distinction that represents far more than a designation. It reflects who we are at our core and how we choose to show up for every scholar, every day.
As a Unified Champion School, we intentionally design experiences where scholars with and without intellectual disabilities learn, lead, compete, and grow side by side. This includes unified sports teams, inclusive student leadership opportunities, and school-wide practices that ensure every scholar feels seen, valued, and empowered to contribute. We are not just creating access—we are building authentic belonging.
One powerful example of this work in action is our monthly after-school enrichment experience, where our exceptional needs scholars come together with their general education peers to participate in a variety of activities rooted in our core values. In these moments, scholars build relationships, practice teamwork, and see one another as teammates and friends—not defined by differences, but united by shared experiences.
At Liberty, we believe exposure and opportunity change lives. When scholars learn in inclusive environments, they develop empathy, confidence, leadership, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. They learn that differences are not barriers—they are strengths that make our community stronger.
This work is deeply aligned to The Liberty Difference—our commitment to urgently pursue excellence, be the joy, and make the impossible possible. Inclusion is how we live out our promise to every family we serve. It is how we prepare scholars not just for academic success, but for life as compassionate, capable leaders who will help build a more vibrant and unified community right here in Sumter.

Dads on Duty
At Liberty STEAM Charter, we are proud to partner with Dads on Duty. This powerful initiative reflects our belief that strong schools are built through strong family and community engagement.
Dads on Duty is a group of committed fathers, father figures, and male mentors who volunteer their time on campus to support a safe, structured, and joyful environment for our scholars. Whether that means showing up to help clean the building, assist with light maintenance, walk the halls, support morning arrival, lead afternoon dismissal, or jump in during lunch duty—their presence matters. Every action, big or small, reinforces that our scholars are surrounded by a community that shows up.
This initiative was born directly out of our annual Federal Programs Comprehensive Needs Assessment in Spring 2023, where feedback from our community highlighted the importance of increasing visible, positive male role models and strengthening our school-wide culture of safety, support, and belonging. We listened—and we acted.
At Liberty, we know that relationships drive results. Through Dads on Duty, our scholars—especially our young men—see positive role models who demonstrate what it means to lead with integrity, serve others, and be the change. These everyday interactions help reinforce our core values and create a culture where scholars feel safe, supported, and motivated to rise to high expectations.
This work is an extension of The Liberty Difference and one of our five key pillars—family involvement. We don’t just invite families into our school—we empower them to be active partners in shaping the culture and experience of our campuses.
Dads on Duty is more than a program—it’s a movement within our Team & Family.

Parent Teacher Organization
At Liberty STEAM Charter, our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a vital extension of our Team & Family—bringing together parents, caregivers, and staff in a shared commitment to support every scholar’s success.
Our PTO exists to strengthen the connection between home and school by creating meaningful opportunities for engagement, service, and partnership. From supporting school-wide events and celebrations to organizing volunteer efforts to helping elevate the parent voice in decision-making, our PTO plays a critical role in shaping the Liberty experience.
This work is grounded in our belief that family involvement is one of our five key pillars. We don’t just invite parents in—we empower our VIPs (Very Important Parents) to lead, to serve, and to be active contributors to our culture of excellence. Whether it’s coordinating events, supporting classrooms, or helping execute initiatives that bring joy to our campuses, our PTO helps ensure that Liberty feels like more than a school—it feels like a community.
Our PTO was born out of our Federal Programs Comprehensive Needs Assessment in Spring 2022, where feedback from our families made it clear that there was a strong desire for deeper connection, clearer communication, and more structured opportunities for parent leadership. We listened—and we built a system that reflects those priorities.
At Liberty, we know that when schools and families are aligned, scholars win. Our PTO is a powerful example of what it looks like when a community comes together to urgently pursue excellence, be joyful, and make the impossible possible for every child we serve.
